Issue #1245 - January 9, 2001
From: Rod Aries
Hey, I have been reading the thread on "Is Personal Contact Effective Web Promotion?" from a bit afar, as I too hate networking meetings... and I really hate reading about networking meetings.
Gawd, I even hate non-networking meetings. Over the past two years, I have been able to average about 500-800 miles per month on my car per month, most of that is when it is my turn to car pool to pick up our daughter from grade school.
Even my trips to CompUSA and Office Depot (both about 3 miles away) 'bit the click' when I totally converted over to online purchasing. Having said that, last night I had to trek 5 miles to meet with the shaper who is making a new long board for me (jeez I wonder if I could of installed a web cam in his shaping room); but that arduous trip had a bright side as his shop is next to Rubio's Fish Taco's...
Anyways... what does the above have to do with "Is Personal Contact Effective Web Promotion?" Well, I would suggest that while "Personal Contact Web Promotion" can be effective for some, "Writing Personally, is a More Effective Web Promotion" can be a more meaningful strategy for many.
I have learned quite a few lessons in business and my personal life (I learned one from my partner today); unfortunately almost all of them were major bonehead screw-ups where I end up muttering to myself, "Sh*t, I will never do that again!" One of the lessons I encountered, that is germane to this topic was: People buy things from people they like. I mean, why do you haul yourself away from your family or office and go to visit a bunch of people you don't even know... to get them to "like you" (or your product/service).
So, I would suggest a more "internet effective" way is to make friends with your visitors, invite them stretch out their index finger as they click around your site, entertain them a bit and offer them valuable information before you frisk them for their Visa card number. You know, like, umm, just TALK TO THEM on your web site. Let them get to know you... let them get to like you. Share a little history about yourself, or at least your company (should they want to dig that far), or even a little story.
And, on your web site, unless your are a boorish, stodgy site steeped in corporate bureaucracy, you may find it more effective to employ the "Writing Personally is a More Effective Web Promotion" strategy. Write like you talk, a couple of "and's" or "so's" or "but's" here and there do seem to make it, well, more personable. Yeah, I know it is not face to face, but it is face to monitor, and you can reach far more people via their monitor, every day, than you can spilling a fish taco on your lap as you drive off to a 7 p.m. network session.
Next time I even think about a face-to-face meeting, if it is any consolation to you, the only "press the flesh" that I will be doing is when I lay my skin (wet suit) down on my new surfboard as I'll catch a wave or ten until that 'should I go to a meeting' thought totally subsides.
At your service,
Rod Aries
